i know most macroalgaes benefit the tank by removing phosphates, nitrates, nitrites etc. but are some better than others. i have this that sprouted off of a rock which had some beautiful ricordea mushrooms until a hitchiker crab ate them. any ideas about it?

It's a species of halymenia. Tell tale sign: if it has a slimy feel to it. There so many species that it is very difficult to identify fully. If it sprouted from a rock, you are lucky. Halymenia usually doesn't form any holdfast to surfaces.
